There are cards for sale with verses already written for the loss of a pet in most stores that sells cards. I think I would just acknowledge their loss and your sympathy. If you have lost a pet as well, perhaps you could relate from your experience, or maybe you could relate a story about your friends pet that related to you ie; I always loved the way ______ ran to meet you when you came home. I commend you for helping your friend. They have lost an important member of their family.
I hope this helps.

I unfortunitly have to write a lot of pet sympathy cards...it's always best to just say how you feel..

Nothing anyone can ever say can make you feel better over the loss of a pet, but you can let them know you understand and miss the pet too.

Rainbow bridge is also a good idea.

There are a number of cards you can buy from the card section ...Walgreens has a selection especially for the loss of a pet...complete with a verse...sometimes just the fact you sent a card lets the recipient know that you are thinking of them...just sign your name

You might print this out and include with your card-- It sure helps me:
May I go now
Don't you think the time is right?
May I say good-bye to pain-filled days
and endless lonely nights?
I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be,
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first.
I fought with all my might!
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.
I want to go! I really do!
It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day .
To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and are afraid
because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.
Thank you so for loving me.
You know I loved you too.
That's why it's hard to say good-bye
and end this life with you.
So hold me now, just one more time,
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

I would tell the person how extremely lucky they were to have the unconditional love and loyalty only a dog is capable of giving, and how fortunate the dog was to have shared this persons home and life style. I would remind them that you can only hurt as much as you have loved and that you have to focus on the happy memories and cherish them. Accept this loss as an opportunity to be a more compassionate and more understanding person, open your heart to another little soul who could benifit by the love you have to give.

There's a poem about the "rainbow bridge" if you do a search online I'm sure you could find it. But the rainbow bridge is the animal version on getting to heaven with green fields endless cats to chase and so on

That is sweet of you to think of your friends. When my friends dog had to be put to sleep, I went and got her a flower arrangement.
So many people forget that dogs are a really important part of our families, and when we lose them it is really heartbreaking.
Give your friend a big hug and say how sad you are too.

Say something like "I know that your going through a very rough time, but I just want too let you know that I will always be there for you whenever or wherever you need me." Something like that, just be honest and let them know that you are truly sorry.
