I am raising money for Multiple Scelerosis, and for some reason people around me are giving me a negative vibe. Like, when i ask people to sponsor me for a walk im doing at the end of the month they ask me "why are you doing it? do you personaly know someone with MS?" and i tell them that i dont, and that im doing it for the cause. and then they look at me like "ok but why help someone you dont know?"

Then my mom and aunt were asking the same thing, like "you dont have to raise money to be part of the walk for MS, so why are you doing it?" It's like im doing something wrong, and it makes me feel bad. And i dont know if its selfish, but i want to feel like a good person, and i am doing a good thing. What do you think?

I am also raising for Multiple Sclerosis and doing the walk where I live at the end of April. I am getting the same thing as you from my family. It is like trying to get blood from a stone...lol. When people tell me ask me why I am raising the money, etc I tell them that I am raising the money because this is the cause that I believe in and because the more people know about something like this the less ignorant about it they are going to be.

You are not doing anything wrong, it is just that everyone else chooses to be ignorant because they think that if they pretend that they don't know about or if they act like it doesn't exist then it isn't there and they don't need to worry about it.

I believe that one person can make a difference, so don't give up.

Keep up the good work and I hope that you do well in your fund raising and on your walk.

There is nothing wrong with that at all. Unfortunately in this day and age people feel they have to be directly affected by something before they try to make some kind of a difference. Even if you don't have or don't know someone who has MS, there are still several people out there who are affected by it and you are making a difference. Just because others around you don't want to help people they don't know doesn't mean you shouldn't. Help is not a four letter word although some people seem to think it is.

You are doing a good thing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with raising money for a wonderful cause such as MS. Perhaps they are stingy and don't feel as though they should have to donate money. Whatever the case is, it is their problem. You are doing an amazing, selfless thing. Don't worry about what others think. Good luck raising the funds :)

The trouble is, the money is other people's money, and you're asking them to spend it for a cause you choose.

I've never gotten the concept of these walks, to tell you the truth -- what's the walking got to do with anything?

I guess as a way of publicizing a problem they make sense, for a bunch of people to walk and be seen.

But why would a person pay another person to walk?

You can donate your own money, and your time and energy to whatever you want.

But you need to let other people make those decisions for themselves, too.

It's not that I don't admire your wanting to help a cause that doesn't effect you personally (which is less common that supporting a cause that effects someone you know) -- it is admirable.

I wonder if there's some more practical way you can help.

When you think about it, walking per se doesn't help the victims.

And people are hit up for money by everyone; I think you're seeing burn out.

It seems like many people any more don't have a heart for those in need. Many people seem to be selfish and only think people do things for people they know, even though this is not always the case. But YOU ARE DOING A GOOD THING.
