i am looking to buy an SLR-like camera, on ethat is rather inexpensive comparded to the $500+ cameras. i am an amatuer photographer, and would like a camera with high quatliy, and more than just a point and shoot. i will spend $200-$350, on account of being afraid of damaging a camera. i take many outdoors pictures, pictures in motion, picutres inside, etc.
possibly help me deside on the cannon or fujifilm cameras?
possibly refer me to a good camera of either of these brands?

In this range, Canon is ruling supreme. Canon A-640 is a fantastic camera. Fuji has a very good offering in finepix F-30, however, A 640 has much more features and better colors.

HI,
If you're looking for an SLR-like camera then have a look at the Canon PowerShot S3. This won't be much more than your budget. I was looking at it myself but ended up going for a Canon EOS 400D - a good and reasonably priced entry level SLR.
I don't think you should go cheaper because you're afraid of damaging it. If you really want to take photos go for a good one and buy a good case to protect it and make sure to always replace the lens cap. You can buy LCD screen protectors very cheap and they'll help prevent scratching.
If you're going near entry-level SLRs then go for the Canon EOS 400d or the Nikon D80. You could save some money and go for the older models, which are still great - Canon EOS 350D or Nikon D70.
Most compact cameras are point and shoot with a few nifty features, but don't give you the freedom and manual overrides of SLRs.
http://www.dpreview.com is where I read the reviews to help me decide - a top site.

Canons make the best overall camera in the consumer level. I dont see why you want to compare an SLR to a consumer camera. They cant be compared. I just dont like fuji bcause they force you to use their xD cards, which all other companies use SD cards.
Here are a few choices:
Slim and Small- No limit- Canon SD900
Slim and Small- $300-400 limit Canon SD800 IS (Has Imagine Stablization)
Slim and Small- $200-$300 limit- SD600 6MP
Ultrazoom- Canon S3IS (Has Imagine Stablization) 12X optical 6MP
Budget Camera- No limit- Canon A640 10MP 4X Optical Zoom
Budget Camera- Less than $300- Canon A630 8MP 4X Optical Zoom
Enutheist Camera- No Limit- ($500+) Canon G7 10MP 6X Optical Zoom
SLR- No Limit- Canon Mk-II $5000 w/o lens
SLR- $3000 - Canon 5D Full Sensor
SLR- Budget - Canon 30D
SLR- Below $1000 w/ lens kit - Canon Rebel XTi

in case you're searching for a bridge digicam, Fujifilm's mix of viewfinder, instruction manual controls and low value is complicated to triumph over. Neither CANON nor Nikon positioned viewfinders on their greater value-effective fashions and Nikon additionally skimp on instruction manual controls. Fujifilm do not make DSLRs, of path, so Canon and Nikon do not do too badly right here, yet Pentax and Sony are purely tremendously much as good - they simply anticipate their clients to be smart. at the cheap end, steer away from Kodak, Benq, Vivitar and GE - the others are all plenty an identical, yet Canon and Nikon tend to can charge greater. artwork out how plenty you prefer to spend, confer with a broker and cope with a pair of applicants earlier making your very final determination.

Consider the camera I bought for my daughter for Christmas.
Fugifilm FinePix S5200. Has 5 megapixels, 10X optical zoom, takes excellent 8X10s when enlarged. Very good on batteries, 1 second delay between shots. Dec I paid $238 at Beach Camera + shipping. Look at Website dpreview.com and also look in local library at Nov'06 Consumer Reports.

I would try a Cannon. My grandfather has one and he is not the most skillful photgrapher but the pics turn out nice and clear, expecially outdoor photos.
