Depends what religion they are a missionary for, and what kind of mission it is:

Generically speaking there are two types of missions: proselyting (sharing their beliefs) and service (humanitarian effort stuff). Some missionaries do both.

Study the life of the Apostle Paul in the Bible. He was one of the greatest missionaries this world has ever known or read about.

A true missionary leaves their home to let others know about Christ. This can be done in their own country but many choose to go to other countries.
