it's not calories that damage teeth, it's sugar and acid found in ALL sodas. weight-wise, you are probably right, but as far as your teeth, water is definitely better.

No, it's not 'safe' to say that drinking Diet Coke is as healthy as drinking water. It's downright misleading!
One of the sweeteners in Diet Coke is Aspartame. Just look at this list of what Aspartame may be involved in and think again:
"Aspartame Side Effects
The components of aspartame can lead to a number of health problems, as you have read. Side effects can occur gradually, can be immediate, or can be acute reactions. According to Lendon Smith, M.D. there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don’t relieve their symptoms. Then, there are users who don’t ‘appear’ to suffer immediate reactions at all. Even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP.
Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:
Eye
blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
pain in one or both eyes
decreased tears
trouble with contact lenses
bulging eyes
Ear
tinnitus - ringing or buzzing sound
severe intolerance of noise
marked hearing impairment
Neurologic
epileptic seizures
headaches, migraines and (some severe)
dizziness, unsteadiness, both
confusion, memory loss, both
severe drowsiness and sleepiness
paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
severe slurring of speech
severe hyperactivity and restless legs
atypical facial pain
severe tremors
Psychological/Psychiatric
severe depression
irritability
aggression
anxiety
personality changes
insomnia
phobias
Chest
palpitations, tachycardia
shortness of breath
recent high blood pressure
Gastrointestinal
nausea
diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools
abdominal pain
pain when swallowing
Skin and Allergies
itching without a rash
lip and mouth reactions
hives
aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma
Endocrine and Metabolic
loss of control of diabetes
menstrual changes
marked thinning or loss of hair
marked weight loss
gradual weight gain
aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
severe PMS
Other
frequency of voiding and burning during urination
excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
increased susceptibility to infection
Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all
death
irreversible brain damage
birth defects, including mental retardation
peptic ulcers
aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
hyperactivity in children
severe depression
aggressive behavior
suicidal tendencies
Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Epstein-Barr
Post-Polio Syndrome
Lyme Disease
Grave’s Disease
Meniere’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
ALS
Epilepsy
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
EMS
Hypothyroidism
Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
Fibromyalgia
Lupus
non-Hodgkins
Lymphoma
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook ‘disease’ symptoms, such as Grave’s Disease.
Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a result of aspartame poisoning. "

No problem as far as your weight is concerned--so you're okay in that respect, as well as for your teeth.
Carbonation can cause bloating, though, even in non-calorie beverages. Carbonation can also take calcium from your body. Additionally, unless they say "caffeine free," colas contain caffeine, which can create problems with your nerves, sleep, and even blood pressure.
I take a particular interest in your question because I drink diet caffeine free cola--a lot of it. I drink far less water than I should. I figured there was no problem with this (nothing in the soda - like carbonated, colored water) until I had a bone density test. Needless to say, I failed.

Drinking water would, I assume, burn more calories than drinking a diet coke. Drinking water helps to speed up your metabolism temporarily, and is healthier than a diet coke.
The sourced article states that drinking an extra 2 liters of water a day can burn up to 100 more calories.

Diet coke isn't as healthy as water, and it can ruin your teeth. You are supposed to drink a minimum of 64 oz of water a day - not including water in food, tea, coffee, other drinks, etc. Real plain (or flavored) no calorie water. That's not to say that you can't drink diet coke, but don't think it can replace water.

Many proven diet programs including the world famous weight watchers doesn't approve of diet soft drinks as part of their weightloss regimen. Two reasons:
1) The sugar substitute has almost no calories in the labratory, but when it's digested the way that it gets processed in the liver is not only unhealthy, but gives amny of the same signals as sugar in fat deposition.
2) You don't wean your taste buds off of sugar when you have a sugar substitue which is critical in staving off sugar and carb cravings, leading to more likelihood that the person will slip and give into the simple sugar and carb temptations.
So in short. It's not good. not to mention that large amounts of it cause brain tumors in lab animals to boot.

No professional here, however, diet pops have zero calories and they are just plain and simple, not good for you. Instead of justifying why drinking coke is okay b/c it only has one calorie, check out all the benefits of drinking water are!

Water is the best drink. It quenches thirst, leaves no aftertaste and is devoid of calories. It hydrates the body and helps the system stay in good running order. As for diet coke, the only thing that's good for in my opinion, is taking the rust off your car's carburator. Horrid stuff! Yuk!

Yeah.. no calories. However you must consider that it still has sodium in it, which is likely to make you retain water while water has no sodium. Water always wins. But it is not too bad for you either while consumed in moderation.
P.S. - If you want explanations from a professional, then this is not the best place to be. :-)

I thought this, too, but my dentist told me that drinking diet coke is bad b/c it has some type of acid in it that decays your teeth. Also diet coke has caffeine, and that is a diuretic. I still think it's better than regular coke, tho.

soda is not healthy for you under any circumstances. if you stop drinking soda for a month or two, and drink one.. you'll realize that soda dehydrates your body instead of rehydrating it.
I'm a complete skeptic of anything that says they only have 1 calorie and that makes them good for you. Calories aren't the enemy... sugars, trans fat, starches and corn syrups are. Fake sugars are even worse than real sugars. If you're really trying to be health concious.. lay off the soda.
