The oil is a type of the Holy Spirit. It is used as a point of faith and obedience to the Word of God (....anointing them with oil and the prayer of faith shall save the sick....). It is used whenever praying for someone to be healed, or delivered. It represents the power of the Holy Spirit to apply the blood sacrifice of Christ to any situation, and to set that situation free from satanic attack. We don't have faith in the oil but in what the oil represents.

Depends on which religion you're referring to depends on the purposes used... but it's usually a particular oil that's been blessed (via whichever religion is using it), and is a physical reminder of the blessing/anointing received.

The oil they used in the Byzantine Catholic Rites I grew up in used to smell SO nice... they used it for special Holy Days of Obligation, like at Christmas, Easter and such. I think it's also used for exorcisms too if I'm not mistaken... can't remember though, but it's all about a blessing.

Wiccans and neo-Pagans and Shamans also make use of such things, per their beliefs.

There are three kinds, all three made from olive oil:

Oil of the sick (which is obviously for the sick!) OI written on the bottle

Oil of Catechumens (used to annoint people who wish to be Baptized Christians) OC written on the bottle

Oil of Chrism (or Holy Chrism - used for Ordaining, Consecrating and putting in the Lustral Water at an Easter Baptism. SC written on the bottle

Made holy by the Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese at a special Chrism Mass - usually held on Maundy Thursday

On Holy Thursday the Bishop of the Diocese blesses the oils used by the priest in his diocese. These holy oils are used at Baptism, Anointing of the Sick, Confirmation and Holy Orders. The oils are a symbol representing the strength of the Holy Spirit.

Anointing oil is a deception of Christianity, there is no such thing.

Jesus speaks of oil that the woman with the alabaster box used to anoint him at the hour of his death

In Mark 6:7-13 Jesus sent the Apostles 2 by 2, but he never authorized them to use oil to heal, they did this on their own, it was a tradition of the Jews.

it's oil that's used when praying for the sick, the person who does the praying takes a little oil on their index finger touches the person's forehead that is being prayed for. Some people make a cross with it instead of just touching.

We use oils in my church and the Catholic church uses oils, as well...many churches/denominatins do. Oils are meant to annoint you...bless you in the name of Jesus. It's just another way of bestowing a blessing. In my church, they are used during baby dedications, baptisms, for the sick and for anyone just wanting a blessing.

Wd-40.

It has many uses. I used some to free up two locks that wouldn't open and the temperature was three degrees below zero, and the wind was...oh what the hell...what was your question again?

13. Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.
14. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15. and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him.
16. Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.
