children should remain in booster seats until they're taller than 4 feet 9 inches and weigh more than 80 pounds. They should use the boosters until they're tall enough for their knees to bend over the edge of the seat while their backs are resting firmly against the seat back. states have different laws about how long a child should remain in a booster seat, but 4' 9" or more than 80 pounds is when it is safe according to the CDC and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)

I have had a pediatrician tell me that at age 4 AND 40 pounds a child can ride in the back seat without a booster...probably if it's just a lap belt.

I still have my 5-year-old in a booster...I've also heard that if the child's legs are long enough that they can bend over the edge of the seat (at the knees) then they no longer require it.

The purpose of a booster seat is to ensure that the shoulder strap fits properly.

here it is 4 and 40lbs, however when i put my 5 year old in a car without the booster, i might as well let him ride without buckleing him up. He looks lost in the back seat! So my answer is this,: The state might allow you to remove the seat, but don't follow that guideline until YOU are comfortable with it AND you child demands to get out of it. Otherwise they will always be safer in the carseat/Booster..... ps, both my boys got the graco sportsseat kind, i never took the back of and they love it! I had to take my oldest out on occasions, like 2 or 3 times in the past year, where i was taking a taxi and didn't carry the seat with me....lol... but he does complain and wants his seat.
Good luck

In California, the state determined that 6 years and 60 lbs. is the age/weight that a child can safely ride in a vehicle without a safety seat.

Each state has a different set of laws. Where I live, they have to be 6 years old OR sixty pounds to ride w/out a booster. The seatbelt still cuts across the neck of many shorter six year olds at this point, though, you should determine if your child is big enough by observing how the seatbelt fits him when he's sitting w/out the booster. The belt should go across the shoulder, not the neck, and he should feel comfortable about the belt's position, not fidgeting to avoid the belt.

In Canada there is the peak regulation and the age regulation, it somewhat is 4 foot 9 right here too yet that basically implies until the youngster turns 12. If she is sixteen she does not could desire to trip in a booster seat, for gods sake, she's sufficiently previous topersistent!

Our pediatrician says to keep them in a booster seat until they are 60 lbs. My 6 year old is 50 lbs, and he is still in his. All my kids stayed in carseats until they were 3, and then they went to the booster seat.

you can take them out of their little car seat as soon as they can't comfortably fit it it, but you should get a booster seat for older children. they should b at least 4 9, then the booster seat can go.
