I just got braces today and I am re-thing getting them on. Well too late now but they are very uncomfortable. My mouth is starting to get soar due to the metal. How bad do these soars get and how long will this uncomfortable feeling last??

Anything else I should know regarding braces?

I had braces for 3 years, so I know a thing or two about them. Your teeth will have that sore feeling for a day or two each time you go in to have them tightened. Here's my advice: Each time you are scheduled to get your braces tightened eat a big meal before or right after because your teeth will begin to get too sore to eat anything solid for a day or so. I ate oatmeal, bananas, stuff like that. After about a few months, you'll forget you even have them except when it's time to go back again, it's a continuous cycle! I am one of the few who never really had any complaints about wearing braces.
Brush your teeth very good at least twice a day. Floss often even though it's a pain in the butt. Make sure you are getting under the wires good to prevent gingavitis. You'll be a pro after a few months. It will be worth it all when they take them off completely and you have a beautiful set of choppers.

For the soarness from the bands and brackets, they make dental wax that you can use to cover them and make them comfortable. You can use Tylenol to make the soarness the braces cause in your jaw, and it should go away in a few days, when your mouth is used to the hardware. You may be soar for a couple days after you get your braces adjusted, and you may not, I didn't. More often than not, people do get soar, if you do, eat softer foods, like soup, meat loaf, etc. You will get used to the routine of the adjusting, and when they come off and you get your retainer, you won't have to worry about any more soarness.

I hope your orthodontist gave you an information and care sheet to help you understand what will happen, and how to make everything go as planned. If you take care of your braces, you won't have to worry much about having to go through the boring process of having anything that needs to be replaced. Make sure you floss well, braces make brushing a bit harder. Floss really well around the teeth with the metal bands in the back. If anything pokes you, let your orthodontist know, and he/she will have you come in, in the meantime, use the wax that you were given to cover it. if you get hit in the mouth, take a real good look at everything, braces can give you a nasty cut, or can be loosened. If you're not sure about anything after you get hurt in the mouth, call your orthodontist. Don't eat sticky stuff, or chew gum, it can get stuck in your braces, and it's hard to get out. It can also put the brackets off.

The better you take care of your teeth and your braces, the healthier your teeth are when the braces come off, and you can blind everyone with your best pearly white smile.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Type "orthodontic (or dental) braces" into the search box on your internet page.

brand new braces can be uncomfortable for about 2 weeks, if you get sores on the inside of your mouth from the metal rubbing against you, get some soft wax to cover the metal until the sore heals. each time you get a new adjustment for the first years it usually takes about a week for the uncomfortable feeling to go away. my teeth were very bad, i had to wear a head gear to move my teeth around. don't get discouraged, just think ahead to the fabulous smile you will have. you also might want to invest in a water pik tooth brush. makes cleaning the braces easier and your mouth feels fresher cause gum chewing is not easy!!

The first day I got my braces was the worst. But my teeth stopped hurting in a day or two, and the feeling of having metal in my mouth passed in a week or two.

Now, (a few months later), I hardly notice them anymore, except for a couple days after there tightened.

Ya, you might have a sore or two in your mouth sometimes, but your mouth toughens up pretty quick.

The soreness lasts about 1 1/2 weeks, if I remember right it was like 6 years ago when I had them. You just have to eat soft foods like bread untile the soreness goes away. Every bite will add pressure. Once the initial soreness goes away, it's not so bad, I'd say the worst thing was eating sandwiches. You bite into a sandwhich and all the bread and meat go in and get stuck in all the braces. It's pretty gross. So you have to kinda get it out with your tongue, and that used to gross me out! Good luck!

jesus christ wat's with you people? doesn't the orthodonist tell you this stuff before hand But I guess you just need some answers from random people like us, right? well then to answer your queston it only last about a few days everytime u get them tightened until your nerves gets use to it and your teeth start to shift more comfortably. I have braces my self. it was torture after the first day I got them put on. They shouldn't cause a lot of severe pains. Just a couple days of uneasiness then everything will feel right again.

braces aren't so bad. after the first week you won't even notice you have them anymore. once in while a wire may bother you, but wax normally helps that. basically, it's worth it if you want straight teeth.
