I can drink a pot of coffee, and go to bed. At one time in my life, I could do amazing amounts of cocaine, and go to bed. I could do meth, and go to bed. Turns out, I was later diagnosed with ADD.(at 32 years old) And what do they prescribe for ADD? Ritalin, or Adderal, both of which are speed. Stimulants actually have the opposite effect on those who truly have ADD. (By the way, I've now switched my medication to Straterra, which is non-speed based, and works really well for me.) So, if stimulants have this effect on you, I would check into getting tested for ADD. It won't help your staying awake problem, but, if you do have it, knowing, and treating it can make a great difference in your life.

Most of the time caffeine gives me a boost like you'd expect. But once in a while, my energy just plummets. I'm not talking about the "crash" after the boost. I mean my energy starts going down hill 20 or 30 minutes after taking it. It seems to happen 10% of the time or so. And I have no idea why.

I usually drink energy drinks to get a boost but sometimes depending on how tired I was before I drank it I would come crashing down after a few hrs later even more tired then I was. Plus those energy drinks have about 20 cups of caffeine in them and I still sometimes feel like I could just crawl into bed right after having one.

Absolutely!
You've probably had way too much coffee for your body. Coffee is wonderful and tastes good, and is great on a cold morning to perk you up.. but it's a crash and burn effect, because coffee is empty calories... plus it's a huge stimulant, and unless you continue to drink coffee throughout the day, you will crash eventually.
I reccommend black teas... oolong tea, chai tea, earl grey tea, or yerba mate. Those teas are great for keeping you awake and alert. Other than that.. try getting an extra dose of protein in the morning.. like peanut butter or whey protein shake to boost your body for a full day's work.

I have had this happen! I am also prone to headaches with caffeine.
I honestly have not found a replacement stimulant. What has worked for me has been the boring "eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep" plan. I have found that since I started this new routine, I have more energy and I can take on more things.
Hope that helps!

If you use sugar in your coffee, it's probably the sugar and not the caffeine that's making you tired. Sugar notoriously gives you a high burst of energy and then you crash.
Do you get enough sleep? I recommend eight hours of sleep, fresh air, exercise and a proper diet. Then you won't need any stimulants.

I've heard of caffeine having a similar effect on folks with ADHD (myself included). Stimulants and depressants work backwards with us, or so I've been told. I've found success instead by using plenty of sugar in my diet, such as small candies and things.
Of course if you stop snackin' your energy will drop again. And you'll need to brush your teeth a whole lot. And there's a number of health problems associated with it..
