Question about Geodon- I have a health course need an answer about the medicine?

The question in the Health Course book is about Geodon. Are Thorazine and Geodon the same? Are the side effects the same?

No. Geodon is a much newer atypical anti-psychotic medication where as Thorazine is an older phenothiazine antipsychotic, so they are not the same. Some similar side effects are still seen with Geodon, but the incidence is lower. Geodon, like all the atypicals, is thought to be more likely to improve negative symptoms as well as the positive symptoms of the disorder.

Geodon is an antipsychotic medication for skizophrenics in dealing with paranoia and delusions. Also useful for manic depression/bipolar illness. You cannot take Geodon and Thorazine together, taking two antipsychotics would result in toxicity along with heart palpatations. If Thorazine is taken with certain other drugs such as Geodon, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Geodon, or ziprasidone, is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Thorazide, or chlorpromazine, is a typical antipsychotic medication.

So they are in similar classes, but the typical antipsychotics are associated with more side effects. The atypical antipsychotics are considered to be "cleaner" by many mental health professionals because they in theory have fewer extrapyramidal side effects, because they effect the serotonin system more. They have a similar side effect profile, but the number of side effects are theoretically decreased.
