I have a 10 year old german shepard doberman mix who has been acting very strange lately. He tends to have vomiting fits at least once a week, recently I have found to lumps on the back of his neck. And the strangest is every so often he randomly tries to get up on the furniture either my bed or the couch which he has never been allowed to do...it is almost as if he is trying to comfort himself because wheter i let him on the furniture or not he begins to shake uncontrollably, however its not the same as a seizure he can still walk and is aware of what is going on... its as is he is horrified and i don't know why because he did not get yelled at or punished. This normally tends to occur at night and at first i was thinking that he was having a bad dream and was genuinly scared but it has now happened without him sleeping. Any thoughts? Also the vet looked at the lumps on his back and stated they were just fatty cysts.

It's not uncommon for dogs that age to start showing signs of dementia and other common "old age" symptoms experienced by humans.

I've got a 12 1/2 year old lab and he gets away with a lot more now than he did in his younger years - I guess in a way I cater to him because I want the rest of his life to be as comfortable as it can be...

Shaking in dogs can often be an indication that they are in pain (although many smaller breeds will shake for no reason). He may be trying to get on the furniture because the hard floor, even if it is carpeted, hurts his body in his old age.

On another note, I would definitely take him to another vet for a second opinion. The lumps may or may not be serious, but vomiting once a week is not normal at any age or for any reason.

I think he is having seizures, and night terrors similar to people. Dogs can and do have seizures for the same reasons as people, they are also cared for in a similar fashion. He surely must have something neurological going on, the "walk" you are talking of, could be pain, he can't tell you if his back or hips hurt, but his body will show you there is something wrong. He should see the doc right away, make him as comfortable as possible.

Our pet do some strange things when they get older. My first thought is that maybe he's not seeing as well as he used to. This can be very frightening for a dog.
I know you took him to your vet but maybe a recheck is in order.
