My dad got me a dog when I was 9, I am 22 now. He got out and killed a calf. I had to shoot the dog. My dad and I are very close to each other and the dog. I don't know how to tell him. He will be hurt so bad. How do I tell my dad.

I found the dog eating the inside of the calf. He has the taste of blood. You can't make a dog forget that.
I had to do it.

I'm sorry but unless you saw the dog kill the calf how do you know he did it?
Is it possible that the dog was eating the calf AFTER a coyote or wolf brought it down and the dog chased it away?
This was an old dog.Did he ever show signs he'd do such a thing before this?If not then you should have put some more thought into your actions and given the dog the benefit of the doubt.
Just because he got a taste of blood does'nt mean he'd forever go after your calves for more.He just found an opportunity that was too good to pass up.
Like I said before the dog was old.Tell your dad. He'll understand I'm sure. But do not expect him to go get you another dog.And in the future think about all the mistakes you made when you were growing up that caused distress, upset or cost your parents financially.Did they once suggest putting you down for any of your actions?

Always tell the truth! Do not lie to your dad he will find out. For whatever reason your dog killed the calf maybe will never be know.
Your livehood I'm going to guess is with the cattle, you had no other choice!
Good luck sweetie!

Were you forced to shoot the dog? Thats really sad about the dog and the calf (I adore cows). You can tell him somthing like "(insert dogs name) was really going overboard and now he killed a calf, I am afraid for the danger of the other cows and calves (it was on a farm I assume?) and so I had to put the dog down. It was too expensive to take the (insert dogs name) to the vet to put him down so I painlessly had to shoot him. I'm sorry..."
I'm sorry for you though, but was it absolutly nessasary to do that?

Ok so your dog was 13 years old? Did you not think there might be a better option than just shooting him?
Obviously you are feeling mass amounts of guilt, you might as well tell your dad the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Poor doggie.
Did you see the dog kill the cow?? Perhaps, a coyote or something else killed it....any dog would eat something like that, after all they are carnivores...
And you said he got out, maybe you should have had him somewhere where he couldn't just get out...

Let me see here. If he got this dog for you when you were 9 and you are now 22 that would make this dog 13...It hard to believe a dog that old would kill a calf. Also hard to believe someone can kill their own dog after having it for 13 years. I really do think something is a missed with this story.

The normal response to a livestock killing dog is to pay the farmer restitution and build a better fence.
I sure couldn't help you explain to your dad why you just killed it.
But, be honest, and just tell him the truth..Perhaps he is the one who taught you the right thing to do is destroy the dog, so would understand. .
I had a farm, 63 exotic animals..my pregnant dog did eat a rare sheep once.. I just made the fencing better..I guess I just love my dogs too much?

Please say it in a harmless tone and tell your father these exact words.....
"Dad i am so soory but there was an accident on my ranch/farm..(whatever) and one thing led to another and (dog's name) had his teeth around a calf's neck. I was shocked and had to keep him away. And because he was being dangerous i had to shoot him. I am so soory but don't regret doing it because i loved him as much as you and he was a great dog. .."
That is soo touching and meaningful.
I hope that helps
Good luck

Yae just tell him the truth he will understand that maybe it was the right thing to do for the dog......but honestly i think instead of shooting the dog you could have put him on a "punishment"....thats how we do things
