You really should see a doctor to rule out a bulging or ruptured disc. They are very painful and sometimes nothing seems to help the pain. If left untreated you can end up with permanent nerve damage. But like I said, see your doctor for an exam. He/she will know better than most anyone here.
I hope you feel better soon. I have had chronic back pain and sciatica for 14 years.

A chiropractor can make sure nothing is out of alignment and use ultrasound as a form of physical therapy to reduce the muscle damage that may be present but you may also need to see a massage therapist to help get the amount of knots out of the muscle that it usually takes to be in that much pain. The heat and aleve are good things for muscles.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. Press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

Your bed may be sagging in that area. Put a thin pillow under your back to correct the sag.
I find 2 Maximum strength Excedrin to be the most beneficial for pain. Equal to Vicodin. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis in my low spine and it is much the same as a constant toothache.
So I have too much experience with pain killers.
I had no luck with Aleve, ibuprofen kills no pain for me, but it is great for swelling and inflammation. Ice Packs help on pain.
Asparcreme works quite well. I rub it on at night before I go to bed. No smell.

I think possible you might have a slipped disc.
Go and get you back exrayed.
Back pain is a real buggar.
I get it when i dig in my garden. Because you cant sewe it people dont understand it.
Have you tried a good massage. Some thimes the peopel who do these can pin point the source of the problem and then you can seek medical help in over coming the pain.

Best is go to a doctor and ask questions, and i have those once in a while, its a pain! you have to wait it out for like 1-2 weeks before it goes away. Just when you stand, keep your back straight and dont bend to much, and go to a doctor. Thats all i can say feel better

Does your mattress have springs in them? If they do,then that is a common problem. When you aren't sleeping exactly straight on a mattress with springs, then your backbone is not in a straight position. It is best recommended that you at least get a mattress with a mattress pad on it or a tempurpedic mattress of a sleep number(even better)

Try sleeping on your back with pillows under your knees. It should take the pressure off your lower back while you sleep.

It can be the muscles between the ribs. I dont take alot to pull them, and they are hard to get to heal.
