I don't think there is a way to be overpolite. Just keep being yourself.

It's difficult to do that sometimes. One can be polite and yet assertive enough to not be all smiley & agreeable all the time.
But make sure you are not artificially polite. Try to be genuine. Being artificial does no good to anyone.

Tell the person to shut the h*ll up or else
be direct and look them right in the eyes when saying this,
and then change the subject!

It works everytime!

Be respectful of others feelings, thoughts, beliefs, etc., say your pleases and thank yous, but maintain a certain sense of self respect so that you don't degrade yourself while trying to stay nice.
