My Chocolate Labrador, BellaLuna, just passed away about thee months ago. Bella and I were avid swimmers, constantly in my pool. I really want to get another dog that loves, or at least likes to swim. However, my big dog days are over, and I want a little dog. My friend has a Yorkie who LOVES swimming, but I'm not sure if all Yorkies are the same. Anyone know any small dogs (15 lb. under) who like the water? If not, thanks for reading anyway.

I don't know of any type of small-dog breed that is known for loving water. Big dogs that love water are mainly labradors, leonbergers, portuguese water dog, standard poodles, and welsh springer. I think your best bet is to find mix between a small breed and a water-loving breed.

By the way, although the majority of standard poodles love water, I know many toy and miniatured poodles who absolutely hate getting baths!

I had a Maltese who HATED water (wouldn't even go out in the rain) but now I have a Maltese Poodle mix and a Cairn Terrier Poodle mix who could roll around in mud and snow all day if they were allowed...

It depends on the breed and the individual dog. I would do some research, find out if there are any small dogs that were bred as hunting dogs or some such. I know that poodles were bred as fishing dogs, so I imagine they like water. (Actually, their fishing purpose is the reason that poodle cuts are so funny looking...)

Eh, my 8 lb yorkie really hated water.

If he even heard the word "bath," he would run and hide under the bed.

Also I had a fountain.. you know those little meditation desk fountains? And when I set it up in my bedroom, you could hear the constant running water from the fountain.

Then I couldn't find my dog.

It turns out that because of the fountain, he hid in the closet with all my high heeled shoes. It was so cute and sad... that he was hiding there.

So he vetoed the fountain and I never used it again.

It all depends on the dog.
I have a golden retriever poodle mix who hates water and then I have a bichon frise spaniel mix who likes to swim so if you get a puppy introduce it to water early. There are alot of small dogs that love to swim.

Consider adopting one maybe.

I have a toy poodle(not everyones favourite breed), we go across to the beach everyday and she loves to play with her ball and take a dip. She wont go in too far and actually swim but loves to play in the water.

Poodles were bred as water retrievers..you could get a miniature about that size.
Poodles are great pets and brilliant, you can teach them anything!
