In addition to the alcohol, cigarettes, and excessive spicy foods others suggested, I would also suggest avoiding dairy products and anything carbonated. Milk coats your throat and makes it phlegmy, which in turn encourages sickness, which is also hard on your throat. Carbonation is really hard on your throat and too much of it wears down the membranes. Also, the acid and sugar in brand name sodas is really bad for your throat, too.

If you want a tasty drink that is also really good for your throat, try this: equal parts honey and lemon juice, then water to your preference. Or any herbal tea with a teaspoon of honey. That is also really good warm, and when you are sick it helps, too.

Since food and drink go down the esophogous and your vocal chords are in your trechea is doesn't matter what you eat or drink.

However, you do want to avoid syrupy foods or chocolatey foods that may stick to your soft palate and interfere with the air moving in and out of your mouth....Especially before a performance.

Smoking is a no-no too and you'll want to avoid that as much as possible....That includes areas where there are smokers and little ventilation. You may not feel it, but smoking does indeed burn the tissues of the throat and can cause damage...

Avoid or keep to a minimum dairy foods, which can give you a more mucousy, congested passage.

Clear water and tea are often the best.

Anything really spicy and stay away from alcohol. Warm tea with lemon is great for keeping your vocal cords healthy.
