A friend of mine told me women claim they have a boyfriend even when they're unattached . Isn't that dishonest ? Isn't it childish to have an imaginary boyfriend ? Isn't the only way to get a boyfriend to admit you don't have one ? How can a woman who has an imagnary boyfriend ever get a real one ?

Maybe she doesn't really WANT one... so the only way she can't get a real boyfriend is by saying she already has one...

Sometimes I found myself making up excuses like that because I wasn't interested in guys who liked me. It hurt them less...

Yes, it is dishonest, because a lie is a lie. I don't think its childish to have an imaginary boyfriend, because some women have a hard time finding men, so when they are around their friends who are in relationships they feel out of place, so they make up this imaginary man who0 does everything for them. There are many ways women can find a real boyfriend. Trust me.

Your friend didn't tell you the whole story. I don't know any woman who has an "imaginary boyfriend" or tells everyone about their fictional beau, so your assumption is way off there.

But most women, at one time or another, have claimed to have a boyfriend in order to get rid of a persistent and obnoxious guy who is hitting on her. A guy pursues a woman, she isn't interested but he keeps trying, so she invents a boyfriend as a polite way to turn him down and get him to give up. (That way, he doesn't feel rejected because of personal reasons, it's because she's already spoken for.) Why he deserves this polite fiction I don't know, because he was rude and inconsiderate in the first place for not noticing that she didn't welcome/enjoy his advances.

Occassionally, some women may make up a boyfriend to get their family to stop nagging them - parents especially can be very concerned with their daughter's dating life, and some can be relentless about finding a reason for her single status. So sometimes a woman will make up a temporary beau to allay her family's fears and get them off her case. This is pretty rare though, and I don't personally know any women who have done it.

Some women do say that to keep men away because they do not want to be bothered. Some will even wear a wedding ring just to keep men away. It doesn't always work as there unfaithful people out there.

I always believe in honesty. I would just say, I am not interested in having a relationship. I never lied about having a boyfriend. I just wasn't ready for one and would tell them that. I would agree to friends only. I have a boyfriend now :) and I am happy. He is the best boyfriend I have ever had. Very kind, mature, thoughtful, caring, etc...

When the right woman comes along, she will not be lying to you. Trust that.

Honestly, yes it is. There are many reasons why this is. I know from personal experience why I have done this in the past.
1. You are so not her type, but she doesnt want to hurt your feelings.
2. You have approached her way off guard (gas station, etc) and she feels thats akward or she feels a little scared of you/or you have invaded her space in which she tries desparately to get rid of you.
3. She may be single...but "unavailable"/seeking to start something with someone specific.
4. She does not want anyone side tracking her because she wishes to be single and saying shes taken is a sure and quick way to end that whole "persistant" conversation by a guy that is sure to come.

Hope this helps.

She probably said that because she was sick of being hit on and harassed by guys who don't have a clue when a woman isn't interested in them. She obviously got your attention, so I am sure that once she finds a guy she wants as her boyfriend she will be honest with him and give him an in by telling him she is available. When I was single I lied to guys all the time that I had a boyfriend if they were hitting on me and I wanted them to go away.

We do this when we don't want to be bothered with the guy. Either because we don't want to hurt a nice guy's feelings or don't want a confrontation with some loser/jerk.

Sure it's dishonest, but sometimes it's the only way to deal with certain people. (BTW, the jerk guys don't care; they try to pick you up anyway!)

And finally, "getting a boyfriend" isn't a concern when dealing with undesireables. We'd rather be without a guy. Besides, women who can't be happy being by themselves aren't ready to be with a guy. (Same goes for guys too! - vice versa, I mean.)

Hi, I'll tell you at times I'll say I have a boyfriend but only because some guy keeps pestering me. It sort of like saying, "You know, I have a (jealous and mean) boyfriend some leave me the hell alone!". Of course, at first I'll tell them I'm not interested, but unfortunately a lot of guys can't take no for an answer.

lol..
some woman may claim to have a boyfriend when they don't because they are uncomfortable with the idea of being single. Some might just like the idea of being able to create their perfect guy in their minds and some claim to have a bf to keep other guys away...

YES. women do it all the time. It is childish, but normally they do it so that they don't hurt the persons feelings that they are rejecting. Women with imaginary boyfriends either don't want one- or don't want the one they are talking to.
