That depends on the young lady in question and her likes/dislikes and activity level.
Active people like a larger more active dog..Golden Retrievers are great for this group.
If she likes to talk on the phone and lounge around more, she is old enough for a smaller dog. There are lots to choose from in this category. I love the King Charles Cavalier Spaniels for their sweet temperament.

A 12 year old girl shouldn't have a dog unless her parents are willing to take care of it...In a couple of years, she's going to care much more about boys and her friends and ignore the dog.

I think a 12 year old girl should have a labrador because they are really sweet but it mite be to big for a 12 year old so maybe a mini schnauzer puppy

A 12 year old should have a Mini Schunzer Labador Mix because they are really cute and they are fun to play withand they are gentle round children.

If you like smaller dog I always think you can't go past Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
They are gently, fun loving, easily trainable and Oh soooooooooo cute!

I have Westies therefore I am partial to them. They are very playful and love to cuddle. They are smart and easily trained in obedience and agility. They also don't shed (however they get that tell tale doggie smell between baths) They are small yet sturdy.

you should start your daughter of with a small dog so it will be easy to care for
