When he zones out when he is awake, it could be some type of seizure. I don't think that is the same thing that is happening when he is sleeping though. That is sleep paralysis. It does not have anything to do with seizures.

Hi emma, unless its just simple loss of concintration which it doesn't sound like, it could be a number of different things, seizures, fluid in the brain, tumor, early alziemers (sorry cant spell it).. I don't want to worry you because it could honestly be nothing, but it would be advised to get him to go to the doctor to be on the safe side!
best of luck x

It could be a form of narcolepsy, but in any case, requires immediate medical attention, with possible referral to a neurologist, as it may occur when driving, or operating machinery, etc.

Take him to a doctor... and get second and third opinions... this may be a sign of something more serious and needs to be treated or cared for immediately

Sounds a lot like a seizure.

My husband has a friend that does that. Have him go see a doctor.

Yes,heard of it before, but don't know the cause. Have you been to your GP? I don't think it's anything to worry about.
