I am 20 years old, 6'1" and 200 lbs. I used to be in shape but lost it after high school. What would you recommend to do to lose the extra weight and tone back up again, and if its just to work out then how many calories should I intake a day and how many should I try to burn everyday?

OK. First you need to know your resting caloric burn rate. There are tons of calculators on the web. I plugged your stats into this one: http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html

You burn somewhere around 2,000 calories just breathing....and that number goes up depending upon how active you are. Even if you are mostly sedentary, you burn 2400 to 2500 calories each day.

The other important thing you need to know is that to lose a pound, you need to burn 3500 more calories than you consume.

.....So, if you eat 2500 calories each day.....and your normally burn 2500 calories each day -- then you hold steady. To lose a pound a week, you would need to burn an extra 500 calories every day, to get rid of one pound per week.

-Walking briskly for an hour burns about 500 calories.
-A half hour of running burns 500.
-Forty-five minutes on the elliptical machine burns 500 calories. Here's a calculator for that:

.........The other way to approach it is that you could reduce your caloric intake by 500 calories each day (to lose a pound per week). Start reading the labels on your food. A light beer can be 100 - 150 calories. A piece of bread can be 120. An egg is 100 before frying it in butter.

The only way to properly lose weight is to reduce the amount of food you eat and to move around. Jog 5 times a week, take the stairs, walk more!
