to answer the other poster about blonde not being gender specific, it is...actually,
in French, blonde is slang for fair haired/fair skinned one, a girl... so it is gender specific...a french guy may call a girl "ma blonde" regardless of haircolour
ette, in french is a diminutive (sp?) for anything related to female...

I don't think so because the -ette is female as far as I know. at least linguisticly in french I thought. And besides that I would never ever call a guy a brunette personally..... :)

Because girls like attention... years and years ago probably before I was born like our parents age lol girls with blond hair were always "sexy, fun, cute, attractive" girls with brown hair were jealous that blond was always "the thing" so brunette became a word to describe brown hair girls... its more for attention and to feel sexy. This is my opinion, by the way I'm a brunette:)
