This is a rumour I've recently heard. I've searched the web and found out that ethylene seems to play a major role in the ripening of plants in general. Since it is a gas, it could explain why other fruits ripe faster when stored with apples. But this would mean that apples somehow produce more ethylene than other fruits? I'm confused!

A ripe apple produces ethylene, not all apples.
Storing any unripe fruit with a ripe fruit helps the unripe fruit ripe faster.
It is not specific to apples.
