1. Will a rental car be necessary? I'm thinking maybe just taxi
or shuttle bus, or rent a bike? Mostly just going to relax at the
resort (Oyster Bay Resort). Maybe not too practical to rent a
car, if getting around is really easy.

2. Any ideas on what to do, what to see, where to go, or
where to eat while there? Any great day trips or excursions?

To really enjoy the benefits of the both islands,(St Martin and St Maarten) I do recommend renting a car. Renting a car here is not expensive. Taxi is expensive and there is no shuttle bus to the beaches. I would not rent a bike on this island because the traffic is heavy and construction is always going on.

The day excursion I would recommend is taking the ferry to Anguilla and visiting Shoal Bay east. The beaches are awesome and the food excellent.

There is so much to do in St. Maarten. The shopping is all duty free and the best prices of all the islands besides St Thomas. The food is the best and boasts the gourmet capital of the Caribbean.

I have a great website for you.

I have to disagree with the first person who answered. Renting a car in St. Martin/Maarten might prove frustrating because of the small size of the island and the number of cars on that island. You can spend so much time in backed up traffic that it could frustrate you. I don't find that the taxis are expensive at all and as for getting to the beach - you can eliminate that head ache by staying at a hotel that is on the beach. Plus once you get to the heart of the duty free shoping plaza's you wont need a car all of the stores line the two main streets. It's a nice little place but truly hot, so being on the beach will help. Anguilla is like a 25 minute ferry ride away, if you want to take a day trip. It's a lot less congested but doesn't have that much to do - but it's nice nonetheless.
