I have a tattoo there and I'm not manly and I don't look manly.
If people think I'm a dyke, who cares. I know who I am and that's all I care about. Screw what other people think! If you want a tat there get one (and if you have a tat there as long as you are happy with it that's all that matters)

I am a tattoo collector and have seen other female collectors with lovely calf pieces , I however don't personally like the look for me ....I do, however, love the look of a small feminine tattoo placed on the front aspect of the lower shin , about two inches above the foot ...I have a very good friend that has a small cascade of lillies there ( about 3 inches in size) and it's stunning , even in short dresses .
Tattoos are all about self expression, so you do what makes you feel good about your look . You don't want a tat or a placement that you will look back on in 3 years and kick yourself over .

I don't think my calf tattoo makes me look manly. It's a great part to tattoo because of the shape. If you have a good artist he can work with your design so it 'flows' with your body.

Calf tattoos make you look manly, i think. It also goes against you when you try to get a job. Think about a pretty dress or suit that shows your legs - you don't want a tattoo there.

My best friend has puff the magic dragon on her calf and it doens't look manly at all, I don't think her design could look manly.

To me a tattoo is not very atractive. But there are some that looks very neat. Always remember to never put names on you unless its family. Or don't put it on if you feel a little doubt.
