Yep. It was pretty much the "Believe in me or I'll kill you and those you love" method of modern cults today.
A STORY:
Jesus said to himself one day "Hey, let's see what happens if someone says they choose to not worship me" and dee-da-dee, he was off on his way. He came across a home wherein some of the inhabitants refuse to believe in his great love and grace and wisdom, so he smote them accordingly, waved his sword around and screamed "Any more? Any more takers? Who else wants their a*s beat by Jesus the Christ?" The townspeople shook and one by one, began to genuflect as their parents before them and those before them had. Realizing what a powerful weapon he had, Jesus held and brandished the sword at will and to control the townspeople had them stone unbaptized infants and unclean women. One day, off in the woods looking at his own reflection, Jesus looked up to realize he had forgotten his sword back at his kingdom and some townsfolk from the surrounding villages killed him. Fortunately for his frightened fanatics, his grave could not be found and thus they figured he must have ascended to heaven. There were even one or two eyewitnesses who saw it happen. Hearsay? Conjecture? Not in this court of law! If you ain't where you were when we put you there then Poof! there must be a God that took you with him. Doesn't that make sense?

funny walker is very quirky at times. jesus is a very confusing character infrequently described in the bible. he was obviously a small-time cult figure like manson or such and later a real powerful wheeler-dealer, paul, ranged the med-greek areas and finally rome fanning the flame. he had a story and he was sticking to it. he lived off alms and donations for his powerful and very creative stories. paul was the genius he took a minor figure of no concern to jews or anybody and created a hero as joseph campbell said. he really pulled it off nobody including pt barnum ever was a s good a pitchman. bet the really put on a show. bet he made billy graham look like a wilting scarecrow. paul was an amazing chaaracter that doesn't get the attention he should. there is a reason. think about it. that would be to the detriment of the "son of god!" he has to promote but not ever come across as the front man.

Actually this is what Jesus said from the original KJV Bible. So many things can be changed away and from it's original origin.
Matthew 10:34-36 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
We are to place God before our own family first, then our spouce, children, parents etc come next. We are not to love our family more than we love God. This is what God expects from us. Praise the Lord!

Verse 5 "these twelve Jesus sent forth and commanded them, saying, ....... Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law
against her mother in law.
And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."
The effect of His doctrine and teaching will be, not to unite those who confess and those who deny Him, but to divide them, even though they belong to the same family. The publication of the gospel is the occasion of developing the human heart, and leading men to show whether they are for Christ or against him. Yet the persecutions and distresses which often follow, are never the proper effects of the gospel, but always the effect of men's opposition to it.
Carnal men will oppose the truth, and hence a warfare will arise.
Truth provokes opposition, purity excites enmity, and
righteousness arouses all the forces of wrong.
The coming of Christ into a house is often the cause of variance between the converted and the unconverted. The more loving the Christian is, the more he may be
opposed: love creates a tender zeal for the salvation of friends, and that very zeal frequently calls forth resentment. We are to expect this, and not to be put about by it when it occurs.
In nearly all quarrels, except those about religion, the members of the same family stand together, but in religious feuds the family circle is often broken and its parts arrayed against each other.

Yes, now would you like to know the meaning. Jesus knew that His teachings would not be received by everyone and that this would cause conflict in families. No one knows humanity and the personality of mankind better that the Creator of mankind. It is a trade off. He could take away our free choice or He could let us make mistakes and offer a way out of the sin. Father God knows best. He also knows all and sometimes He reveals our future. He was right wasn't He.

Yes Jesus spoke those words because the Gospel and Truth is so powerful that people have been ostracized from their families for believing in christianity. Therefore, Jesus spoke those very prophetic words, that belief in God would cause division among families. Many other beliefs and religions existed centuries before Jesus spoke those words.

If we agree that he spoke those words, which I believe he did, will you also agree that he said the he is 'the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me'?
Likely you won't, so what is your intention? Strife?
Either way, peace. 'Blessed is the peacemaker...' what's the rest?

In this context JESUS states he is at war with unbelievers who continue in sin.
The sword is the WORD OF GOD.
Eph 5v
17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
It's acceptance in the life of the believer separates the beleiver from those who are at peace with sin.
War and murder are sin. So the SWORD would be that which brings peace not war and murder.
The second coming of Christ is also known as the SWORD.
REV 19V
3And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
