In reference to the power and/or plug system. Has anyone bought an electrical appliance in SA, and used it in Australia? The appliance I have says 220-240 v-50-60Hz 40w

Australia is 240 volt, so you wouldn't need a voltage converter.

However, Australia uses an "I" plug:

so you'll need a plug adapter.

All you will need will be the converter plug. Australia uses 240V 50Hz so the voltage and frequency of your appliance are OK. Look at the kropla site just mentioned, it will show the type of plugs and sockets used all over Australia, New Zealand and some of the Pacific Islands. You can get suitable converters in large department stores here in Australia, there are probably some in airports here too at twice the price.

Many Australian hotels/motels have hair dryers hard wired into the bathroom walls, so unless you are looking for the cheapest places you may not need a drier.

The USA uses 120v 60hz for most consumer electronics, while most of the rest of the world uses 240v 50hz. If you are currently in the USA, then probably the easiest would be to purchase an adapter set. But, if you want to wait until you get to Australia, you might just go into a store that sells hardware and purchase a plug for your item.

Yes, I believe you could but you would have to buy adapters for the types of the plugs they have in Australia. A converter kit with 6 types of plugs (prongs) is about $8 - $40. I have used them all over the world.

We have a 3 pin plug, and 240 V.
So you may need an adapter plug only.

You need one of these. Read before you buy.
