Unfortunately, if you have some standards, as most of us have, the Santa Monica-Venice Beach area is a bit pricey. However, there is a nice Best Western (the Marina Pacific) that you should be able to book for less than $200 per night depending on your travel dates. It's right on Venice Beach too.

Come on now, you can't have it all. As we all know, with hotels it's all about location and timing. If you're booking a hotel for summer or spring break, in one of the most popular areas in SoCal, you are going to pay for it. If it's not expensive, it's because the owner hasn't kept it up, and needs to bottom out the price in order to attract customers. You CAN get those hotels for less than $250 per night, but you'll have to come in November, December, or January (and not around Christmas).
I did find rooms at the Holiday Inn in March for $229. Were you looking for a weekend rate or for spring break or summer? Since that's when everyone wants to go, expect to pay more. The Sheraton Delfina was about $250.
With that said, I agree with the previous poster who said that the Best Western Gateway is your best bet. I found rooms for about $160. For the high season, expect to pay more, however.
One more bit of advice: Don't stay at the Hotel California (Santa Monica). You can check out any time you like, you can never leave.

whats up, 3 years in the past my kin and that i went on a 2 week holiday to California; we went to l. a., Ventura, Santa Barbara, Monterrey, and as much as San Francisco. the great time we stayed on the Vagabond lodge. even with the call, it became out to be an incredible lodge chain. low priced, sparkling and secure with friendly team and a continental breakfast! There are even Vagabond unique lodges that are even nicer. we are making plans to pass lower back sometime and could certainly stay on the Vagabond lower back. Have an incredible holiday!

Well, if it's still there, there's a little motel called the Sea Shore which is a block from the beach. It isn't Shutters, but it isn't shabby...

Try the Georgian, Sheraton Delfina, or Doubletree...Sometimes the Viceroy has rates below $300 as well.

I think that your price range is un realistic. Try some of the hotels in Ventura and oxnard.
