My husband has this exact same fear. Now what he does, instead of suffering is he tells everyone he may go in a car with that they MUST drive slowly and really carefully. At first they took no notice and said 'oh you'll be all right' but now they know how serious he is.
Even if he has to go in a cab, the first thing he says is he is a nervous passenger and can they drive slowly.

Practice doing so with very short distances. Go sit in the car with someone else in the driver's seat. Take tiny steps at a time, like sitting in the car. Then a few weeks later, starting the engine, then later, going a few feet. Later still, around the block. Build slowly and you can be over it.
