I fill veterinary fee's claim forms in at work so i have had first hand experience with lots of companies. Petplan is one of the best they cover for life not just 12months.
Shop around though,
Use a check list,
Life long cover (arthritis, diabetes, colitis all require long term treatment) some policys only pay out for a year.
Amount paid on illness - check breed problems and costs
Cover against death by illness or injury
Cover for loss/rewards etc
Holiday cover (cancellations because your pets sick etc)
Policy excesses (marks and spencers dont have an excess and cover for life so they are good not to expensive either)
Third party insurance (damage to property, dog bites etc)
Some policys cover boarding fee if you need to be hospitalised.
Dont just go for the cheapest and make sure you check any exclusions on you policy - you can back out if you dont like it. Peplan offer 4 weeks free so you can get covered whilst you shop around

Personally I went for Animal friends, you can find them at
http://www.animalfriends.org.uk
The reason I chose them were because they offer numerous different types of cover to suit everyone and they charge the same for all breeds of dogs so larger dogs aren't more expensive. Where you live doesn't come into it either. The cheapest I had found for my Akita was about £35 a month but with Animal friends for the same amount of cover I'm paying £13 (that's lifelong cover their gold service).

However the reason I looked at them in the first place is that they are a non profit making organisation. All the profits go to support various animal charities here and abroad. That's the best reason of all to choose them in my opinion.

They take on all ages of dogs (as well as other animals) so if you want to do your bit for animal welfare as well as getting reasonable insurance I'd highly recommend them.

If you do a yahoo search for pet insurance, you will soon find which companies are recommended by other dog owners - and more importantly, which ones you should steer clear of!

Depends on the age of your dog. If it's an older dog then many companies won't cover you. I got insurance for mt 10 year old staffie at petplan.

They've been okay to me.
