Petting and scratching a cat on it's head or where ever simulates the mother grooming the cat. When you pet the cat or scratch it, the cat remembers the mother doing that to them when they were babies. They adopt their human as their mom's. And, it feels good to them too.

My second cat, the newest of two, is now at home alone, without her "sister." They are complete opposites. My first cat, Bella, is extremely affectionate; she will sleep on or near you, and when you pick her up and place her on your shoulder, she will rub her face on your head and ears. The other one, Pinky, I purchased eight months ago at a rescue because she looked so forlorn. Still not able to be as affectionate as Bella, Pinky still demands her face, head and neck be scratched any time she is near me, but she does not like being held. She will sleep near me at night, but only when Bella is visiting my best friend, which she is at this time. So, a cat will want scratched on the head, face and neck whether it is normally very close and affectionate, and when its personality is a bit distant.

There can be several reasons why a cat would scratch around his neck: flea bites; the itch that comes from flea bite allergy; ear mites; ear infection; ringworm in that area. If your cat is allergic to flea bites, he will itch for a long time after he has been bitten and even if you no longer see the offending flea on him. If the cat has ear mites or an ear infection, his inner ear will be itchy or painful; both sensations giving him an urge to scracth around the neck in an effort to relieve himself of the discomfort.

There are all kinds of nasty little parasites that can live on a cat's head including fleas and also ear mites. Take your pet to the vet for all its shots and treatment for all the nasty parasites. Then after a few days get it washed and groomed. The cat will be a lot happier and healthier.

But if your cat is healthy they love their face rubbed. But also they have scent glands in their face, rubbing their face on things transfers scent.

No. They rub their neck and face over their mates, and kittens. It is a way of saying you love the cat, and they want you to. If you leant down, and the cat rubs it's cheek against yours, it really loves you. This is an I love you, in cat-speak.

There are many ways for cats to rub their scent. Rubbing their face is one way. I read somewhere once that when cats spread their scent by rubbing with their face, it is a sign of contentment. When they spray, it is territorial.
I think they also enjoy a good chin scratch and head rub the same way dogs enjoy a belly rub.

Cats are like people, they can be very attatched to their mother. But unlike people, thats always the case! Cats like their necks and faces scratched because thats how the mother cat cleans it kittens. Its a gesture of love and nurturing for cats and when you do that, the cat feels that love.

No, they just like how it feels. They'll even get other cats to do the same for them.
