I would not travel 100s of miles but if you live within an hour or so it is a nice place to go. I am in Croydon in south London and have had a few visits there; it is under an hour by train).
The city is very old, has a nice cathedral, ancient abbey, some roman ruins, a beautiful park, some nice old buildings, good old fashioned pubs and some decent places to eat. It is small enough to walk to most places to eat in a day. There is a fair amount of shops too if that floats your boat but I would personally stay in Croydon for shopping! If you go enjoy.
