You need to react instantly. If you are primarily a striker then strike if you are a grappler then grapple but you never hesitate.
In actual self defense situations you must never freeze, mentally or physically. You must be able to think without thought.
You must be able to respond with your trained techniques as if it were breathing.
This takes a great deal of high quality training, no matter what art you are practicing. Also, if you are rather adroit at one style it doesn't mean you will be equally good at another style. Especially if they are very different philosophies like hard vs. soft or striking vs. grappling.
Stay well rounded, practice often, correctly and intensely.

Yes you have to act right away, but you shouldn't let that stop you from trying. I grappled weekly for 7 months before I could even start to think about putting combinations together to actually get a tapout. But the best thing in my humble opinion is to keep doing it, but invest in lost. Everytime you lose think about if you had time what would have you done & then slowly it will start happening sooner & sooner. It probably took me longer than most, but now I feel like I control a lot of the matches I do. But almost everything I've learned in martial arts was from paying attention when I lost.

Generally when you practice on someone come up with the technique and perfect it. Learn how to get around the technique's flaws. And know how it works. That way when you're grappeling with someone you will know what to do without thinking. But no, you're not supposed to think while grappeling too hard (its a distraction from the action). But while coming up with techniques I would say yes but stay relaxed.

Nothing is a sure win
be wise and be open
It is if what you learn will make you safer that matters.
There i no one way to react, sometimes linear, sometimes not. Shooting in works as well as Parrying. Som techs work as a direct action, some need a setup to work.
You need a teacher to explain the difference.
And how to Spell !!

one more reason why i think that grappling martial arts like BJJ and hapkido are useless in real life situations, they take too long and you will take a good punding before you are done with one move, thus i always advise people to go for striking martial arts first and then grappling later ur main aim is to neutralize the threat as quck as possible and not beat it to submission.

as you become experienced the next step to take really just comes naturally into your technique...thinking of the next move is only common when you begin grappeling but like i mentioned...eventually you go from one hold into another if your opponent escapes or tries to counter!

Like any other martial art it takes time and practice to become skilled at grappling arts. Dont get frustrated and keep practicing.

Imagine if someone punched you in the face and you stood there thinking of a response. Does that answer your question?
