I was just watching MTV
it said that the soldiers are running low and they need more
and that the government is thinking of instating another draft for anyone (male and female) from 18-40 yrs old for the next five years
at one point I was think of going into the army but now I have new aspirations
I am one of the kids that will be turning 18 in the next five years and if this draft actually occurs I could go off to war, before even going to college
I realize it would be an honor to stand next to others and defend our country againt terror but do you think that it a good idea or not?

Not If you're the same gender as your avatar. Only men are required to register for Selective Service. Women can register, I think, but it's not required.

Personally, I really doubt that a draft will ever take place. Nobody wants a draft: the Republicans, the Democrats, Independents, the White House, Congress, nobody. It would turn an unpopular war into, well, there's not even a word in existence I could use. Activating a draft WOULD turn Iraq into he next Vietnam, absolutely. I wouldn't be surprised if there were massive protests and draft card burning in the streets. A draft can seriously split this country apart, and take years to correct. I hope that the government isn't that foolish.

Let's hope a draft never happens again.

For you, the draft if it occurs, should not affect you because you can get a college deferment. Following college, you could be a candidate for the draft, however the last time we had a draft, they also had a lottery system, whereas the low numbers were inducted first.

In this war, so few have had the burden for so many! Often time, they have repeated their service in the war zone two, three, and four times. It hardly seems equitable when so many dead enders have avoided their responsibility, while young patriots have taken up the slack, for them !

What is even more bizarre, in this generation of young people, the dead enders feel no remorse that some young women may have sacrificed her life, so that he has the freedom to hit the gin mills on Friday nights and get blasted out of his mind .

If I were in charge of the selective service, it wouldn't be an age group that I would target; it wouldn't be a college or university that I would target; it would be the losers who hit the gin mills on Friday nights. Considering that Friday nights are the highlight of their weekends, military service would be an improvement in an otherwise, dismal life !

A coupla things will happen if they bring back the draft.....

First, you would see thousands of these brave war lovers like you see on this board - heading for Canada and Mexico to avoid draft...These are called "draft-dodgers".

Then, you would see all the rich politicians in Washington immediately start working on deferments for their children by using money to buy off whomever they have to....

Then, you would see the colleges and universities empty out when the young people start hitting the streets in anti-war protest and shouting "hell no, I won't go" - and they won't.

There would be a good number who would simply "disappear" in the U.S.

What you would end up with are the poor and lower middle class who have no means to avoid it get drafted and become cannon fodder on the battlefield..

Don't believe this? Do a little reading about the Vietnam war and why they did away with the draft in the first place.

It is best to stick with a more reliable news channel than MTV for your news, That and being 13 years old keeps you in a nice position if such an unlikely thing were to occur. What is sad is the answers that may come from your question: Move to Canada, run and hide, send criminals first, Honesty & loyalty to ones country isn't there very often even to those that enjoy all of this countries benefits sorry. Have a safe - peaceful day!

The draft, if enacted, would not be effective. 40 years ago, this country saw thousands of its young men fleeing to Canada to avoid participation in that war. Eventually they were forgiven by a peace-loving President. But now the seed of resistance has been planted, there will never be a draft again.

If this nation can not raise enough volunteers to defend itself, then we have absolute proof that our society is too sick to survive. I will fight any and every attempt to start up any new system of conscription.

I do feel that as citizens and voters, we do have the responsibility to elect only those who have served, to national office. Whatever the party, vote for the Veteran first.

Do not get the news off of mtv. That is the worst place for news or cnn (communist news network). The draft only affects males, you will have nothing to worry about. There will be no draft, I would not want to be along side the person drafted. I would feel more comfortable next to a person who chose to serve, not because he was forced to.

ARMY HOOAH!

The government knows that drafting citizens who dont care about the war or want nothing to do with it is foolish colleges would publicly protect would have alot of drafties leaving the country and would probably make this war so undisirable we would go home just like vietnam without accomplishing anything other than billions spent out of tresury tens of thousands dead and more homeless vets

Let's be logical about this.
If congress is wanting to bring our troops home by 2008, why would we need a draft? We can not get into any further actions unless it is voted on by congress. The Republicans, the President, and the Military have stated repeatedly that they do not want a draft. So why would we need a draft?

Wrong, not the government, the democrats! To be specific, its democrat chairman of the house ways and means committee Charlie Rangle. A real idiot. The military brass has said many many times they were not interested in having people in the military that do not want to be there. It hasn't worked in the past, and it won't now. The folks there now are professionals who joined the military with full knowledge of what they were doing. All we need to do is treat the better, and more folks will voluntarily join.

I have three children. We live in a free country. The draft doesn't correspond with that freedom of choice. After hearing about the conditions of troops and related medical facilities, why would anyone invest there entire lives and income to raise children only to have the government decide what to do with them. No Draft!
