Hell, some of them do it every year and Jesus only did it once.

First, Jesus never got crucified for others sin. he is a beloved servent of God and God would never make him suffer for illogical reason (original sin! huh!!)
Second, if Jesus knows about what people are doing in his name it would definitely increase his suffering.

What these well meaning people do is in vain. The suffering that Jesus endured in our collective behalf was beyond the physical and was deeper than we can possibly imagine.
The excellent presentation, "The Passion of the Christ" was limited to the agony that Jesus experienced in both Soul and body but could not begin to represent what He experienced Spiritually.

I wouldn't use the word minimize. but he suffered so other wouldn't have to- so it does kind of defeat the purpose

they do it to remind themselves of how much He suffered for us, both physically and spiritually, all so that we could find Salvation through His love and sacrifice...
