in my opinion it is no different than hearing a song on the radio popping a blank tape in and hitting record to get the song

P2P download versus Radio listening

P2P
- Music is obtained without payment
- Distribution model allows fast access
- P2P does not pay royalties to the artist
- Digital music can be copied without degradation

Radio
- Music is funded by advertising
- Artist receive royalty payments
- Music recorded to tape is degraded quality
- Purchase of CD or files from iTunes like service required for high quality music

P2P is not illegal in itself. Obtaining copyrighted material without permission (i.e. payment) is illegal. I don't know what you do for a living but I don't think you'd enjoy doing it without getting paid.

irishjayhawk25 - What sort of music do you play? Anything available for sampling/purchase?

preykill - Tapes and CDs are multi-purpose too (more the CDs than tapes but I do recall using the C64 tape drive that took a standard cassette tape back in the 80's). I can backup my system, send presentations out, send photos to friends/family, distribute software, etc.... The "tax" on media in my opinion is more of the big labels trying to squeeze more money out of consumers. Personally I'd like to see more artist bypassing the labels and going directly to an iTunes or some other online distribution model.

As a musician, I feel compelled to tell you that it's all about money. When you download music from p2p and put it on your iPod or burn it to disc, you don't pay the royalties that artists rely on in order to live and to be able to creat more art. Sadly, small time musicians like yours truly don't have the resources to go after people who rip off my recordings. (To be honest, I'd be honored to know that somebody wants to hear my recording badly enough to go searching for it. But it is frustrating that they won't cough up $15 for the CD.) So, the industry giants are the ones who go after illegal copiers, usually making the rich even richer.

when you buy a blank tape you pay for the right to copy music to it (same as when you buy a blank CD or an MP3 player) but, since your harddisk isn't just for copying music and movies, you don't have to pay for those rights when you buy a computer. In my opinion there is no problem when you download a MP3 file, but please, if you really like the music, buy the CD, or pay for the MP3 (in a legal download) the artists have to eat as well...

pop in the tape.

difference is the lossless quality when transferring binary data over the internet. taping over radio is analogue transmission.
