I'm 40 and have very healthy teeth and gums. My (new) dentist is telling me I need a treatment called "perio scale & root pin." I go in every six months for cleanings, and have never before been told I need this treatment. From what I've read, it sounds fairly painful and there seems to be a high likelihood of infection as a result of it.

Is this legitimate, or is this guy just a scam artist?

I think they're telling you the truth. I went to a course on this
just yesterday. This is especially common if you've gone to
an older dentist in the past. They just didn't treat things as
aggressively as we do now. What they're going to do is
get you numb and very aggressively scale and root plane
your teeth to remove any deep-down deposits and diseased
areas. There's not a high likelihood of infection, in fact, they
may put you on antibiotics or put an antibiotic gel treatment
down in the debrided areas. I've never had it done to me,
so I can't say how painful it is, but you will be completely
numb during treatment, and after it, I would guess it's
controllable with advil or tylenol or they'll give you a prescrip.
for something else. Another thing--if you think it's a scam,
go to another dentist and get a 2nd opinion.

It's called scaling and ROOT PLANING and if they said you need it, you probably do. It prevents any more recession in your gum tissue. Painful, no more than a cleaning. Infection, no more risk than a cleaning,

IT CALLED SCALE AND ROOT PLANE NOT PIN

YES IT IS SO THAT THE DEBRIS UNDER YOUR GUM CAN BE CLEANED OUT
