Be careful. Increasing your exercise and decreasing your food intake sounds like a great weight loss routine, but don't get so ambitious to the extent you switch on the fat storage sensors in your body. The body will crave more food, the more you exercise, and if you keep it from having food, your body's metabolism will slow down in order to conserve energy that it isn't getting from the food that would otherwise go in.
That's why quick weight loss routines don't work. It HAS to be a slow process, or else you will run the risk of actually losing muscle mass during the time when the body is storing fat as it's trying to conserve (your body can literally eat your muscle tissue away, weakening your heart and endangering your life). Exercise well, eat healthy, and proportionally, and you should be fine. Don't look for the quick way to fitness, because it just doesn't last. Find a routine that you can stick with for life... Good luck! ~ Rick

First thing thats the most important is, DIET, DIET, DIET!
Then Exercise, because without a proper diet then your exercise will be mostly a waste of time. That said, Walking is good only if you've never exercised before. But walking can only burn so much calories. ( I.E. Running for 10min. will burn more calories than walking). Its a proven fact because the more effort you put forth in your cardio routine the harder your body/heart/lungs/muscles have to work to provide you the energy for your workouts, so you end up burning more calories.
After running for 2-4 weeks you might want to incorporate hills/steps/change in speed or other terrain into your workout so your body doesn't adapt and then your workouts plateau.
Strengthening other muscles like the abdominals, arms, back, etc will improve your general health and prevent strains in the future.

Running is good for building endurance and getting your aerobic acitivity in, but walking burns about the same amount with less stress to your body. I run, though, as it helps me breathe and maintain my body regulation. Of course, you will become more fit, but not insanely muscular and athletic. This takes time.
Gradually you would want to increase your speed a little each week, or run a little farther or longer each week. As your body adjusts to activities, you lose weight and start to burn less calories. Also, do not ever eat less than 1000 calories. Always try to keep above that, even if you are cutting sweets. Eat plent of protein (more than 50 grams I think.. at least for me).
If you want to get "toned," I'd suggest some simple crunches and some bicycling along the way.

To the person who said walking gives you the same results- that's completely wrong.
A few years ago I started jogging regularly - for about 20 minutes a day and I noticed that my belly became much smoother after just a week. So you will definitely notice a difference. Now just make sure you do it early on in the day - soon after you wake up because jogging at night does not have the same effect, you'll burn a lot more fat if you run in the morning.
As far as toning goes - running will tone up your legs but if you really want to tone your entire body, buy a pilates DVD and a set of 3lb weights. If you do pilates, jogging and watch what you eat, you'll notice really fast results.
As far as diet what really works for me is not eating after 7pm. Make sure your stomach is growling before you go to bed and you'll immediately notice results.
Hope that helps...best of luck.

You will probably lose 275 calories doing that. Yes, you should lose weight on what you are doing. It depends on what you mean by saying lowering your food intake.
Are you eating 1500 calories, or 1800 calories. Go for the 1200 calories, or something like that with exercise. Otherwise jogging only makes you lose 275 calories which isn't a lot.

So far so good. To lose your stomach, you'll have to spend a little more time exercising as the stomach is the hardest place to lose fat from. The best exercise for doing this is walking. It takes about 20 minutes for your body to start accessing its fat reserves so you'll want to walk MORE than 20 minutes each session. I'd recommend you start out with an hour 4 or 5 times a week and then increase that to 1.5 hours if you aren't seeing any results. Other than that, just keep off sugar, white flour & alcohol (these all make the body store fat). Good luck.
