I know some carb blockers contain white kidney beans. Is there any benefit to eating them whole?

cherubx,

Threre are many benefits to eating white kidney beans, but there is no anti-carb effect to white kidney bean-extract carb blockers.

White kidney beans contain just about everything you could need except certain vitamins. They have minerals (calcium, iron, manganese, potassium, magnesium, several more), and vitamins (except for vitamins C, A, B-12, and folate). They have lots of protein, and they can be made to taste very good.

They don't block carbs. Neither do the pills.

Back in 2003 a study was made of carb blockers, probably because of the American FDA's ban on "starch blockers" in the early 1980s. Starch blockers didn't work, and the FDA told them to stop saying that they did.

Well, the only study that I know of says that the white-bean carb blockers don't, either. They are supposed to inhibit alpha-amylase, an enzyme that breaks down carbs. If the carbs are not broken down, they stay in the intestine and are excreted. They don't do that.

Trouble is, of course, that anything that might do that--wheat-based "carb blockers" seem to have some minor effect--could also cause intestinal distress (diarrhea and gas). You might not want that when you're with your friends.

Now, my guess about the reason anyone would want to try a carb blocker if because that person wants to cheat. He wants to eat as he always has and not suffer the consequences of his actions. You would do your health much more good by eating right instead of taking a pill. Lots of vegetables and fruit, a little lean meat, all in the proper amounts, and you'll never have to ask about carb bockers again. I weigh what I did in high school when I was playing football, all without pills, and it's not that hard. I have to think about it sometimes, but my health is excellent and so is my weight.

It's much better to do this the right way rather than rely on pills.

PS:
Beans are not the "gas" monsters that most people say that they are. They do cause more gas than meat does, but believe it or not, if you don't eat meat, the gas produced isn't nearly so bad. Sometimes it's not even noticeable. Meat, well, smells worse as it is being digested. So when you eat beans, it's that part that is most, um, noticeable. If you become a vegetarian, you'll find that the "bean" story is mostly myth.

I'm not saying that you should become one, just that there's more to the story than most people know.

They are beans and they are good for you, they are high in fibre and protein and pretty good for supplying trace elements. But it doesn't matter what you do with them, including make them into useless capsules, put on a 2,000,000 % mark up and stick a label on that says they will block carbs and help you loose weight. They will not block carbs nor help you loose weight, that statement is science, medical and truth free!
