If soul is one's self, then saying "I am my soul" would be equivilent to saying "I am myself". If it's just a vitalizing force then the bible must be wrong because it says it's mortal.

If it is both, then you could resurrect yourself and thus be immortal.

Neshama or Pneuma means breath or spirit. It is not the soul.

many people get it confused.
and many deliberately confuse it, and refuse to even attempt to comprehend how it *is* compared to their viewpoint and inteperetation of the semantics of the bibical text.

the text does not define how it is. the text describes how it is. if they disagree, than generally your misunderstanding or misintepereting something.

now, heres how it is.

your true self, is the soul. that is who you are. precisely as you say, saying "I am my soul" is the same as saying "I am myself". this soul/self/entity is a nonphysical being. its not dependant on physicality at all. this entity is not mortal in the sense that we know it.

there is also "spirit" which can mean a variety of things depending on the context. sometimes this refers to the soul, (the above explained entity) sometimes this refers to a less-independent soul-like thing, which is more along the lines of "vitalizing force"
and then some uses "spirit" is more like... electricity, purely energy, which is what CONSTRUCTS both the soul and the lesser-soul-spirit type things. in this sense it could be thought of as a vitalizing force.

but also, "Soul" doesn't always mean "soul" as in that non-physical entity, but merely means "a person".(which is mortal, relatively speaking)

soul is energy that continues through space and time once the body is no longer living. nothing to do with bread and all that jazz. people really need to look into science and physics and then try to understand religious thought. If you look at it correctly - it goes hand in hand - and you really can't have doubts that life will go on (not necessarily to the seat next to Yahweh or allah) but it goes on nonetheless....

if you ask me, a 'soul' is the collection of everything one perceives.
