Heretics were people who believed such evil things as "the earth revolves around the sun and is not the center of the universe."
Galileo, for example, was imprisoned for having such heretical ideas.
Now it's heretical to believe in evolution and other scientific truths.
Then as now.

I would define a Heretic as one who questions established religious beliefs. A person who does not blindly follow, but seeks to know the truth of it. One who is not content to know the "what" of beliefs, but also the why and how. You ask questions and you will rock the ship, you know?
I am a heretic.

A heretic is anyone who has a belief outside of or against Church orthodoxy. It does not mean that the belief is wrong by any means. It only means that it is not accepted by the Church.

Heresy, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is a "theological or religious opinion or doctrine maintained in opposition, or held to be contrary, to the Roman Catholic or Orthodox doctrine of the Christian Church, or, by extension, to that of any church, creed, or religious system, considered as orthodox. By extension, heresy is an opinion or doctrine in philosophy, politics, science, art, etc., at variance with those generally accepted as authoritative." The study of heresy is heresiology.

It's really depends on your beliefs. Anyone who doesn't believe what you believe is often considered one. That's what Roman Church called the protestants.
