Yes, it is perfectly correct to say "It is a lot of money".

The £ is always written BEFORE the amount, even though the word "pounds" is spoken after it, so we write £550, not 550£.

£550 is a lot of money.

The pound sign goes before the number not after.

She is very rich., youre using an adjective here.

You would jsut use is because you already have your subject, 550 and put the sign before the amount, always do this in an english speaking country.
