I think it is important to get a grip on what kind of depression you have- though i an not a Dr. or mental health professional, i have had both kinds and have learned to self monitor and tell the difference, like when i am "going down the hole" big time, i know to get meds.
if it is temporary, i would call it"Situational" depression- due to life events- like putting off making a decision you know you need to make, (like breaking off a bad relationship, etc) avoiding a situation, sadness/mourning, general everyday things, that, once dealt with, will relieve some of the pressure and you can get back to feeling better..... Exercise helps alot.
Then there is the "Clinical" depression- talking about when you need medication here- this would be longer lasting, not relieved by resolving a situation- with both physical and mental symptoms- there are lots of depression web sites that have a quiz to help you figure if this is what is going on with you. No motivation, no enjoyment , too much sleep, "Hiding", - i've done em all..... even runinating thoughts, where you repeat the same stuff over and over in your head.... not fun, time for help.
if one can be introspective and see just what symptoms one has, the Dr can better prescribe what will give you better relief- if you need it. I do think there is still alot of social stigma and some (ignorant) people think that needing help is a sign of weakness- I think it is a symptom of our disconnected world where we have little support network and it is so hard facing it all alone- and we are all alone in our heads regardless....
Knowing yourself and recognizing the warning signs of an approaching downswing you can take steps to heal, step back, care for yourself before it is necessary to go get meds if you can self monitor, this works great. but if you need them, dont be afraind to ask. i have gone on 2-3 months, gotten out of the hole, fixed some issues, and then may be good for a year or so before i need meds again. bet between there may be 2-3 spells where i have to me careful because i see the hole in the road ahead, and take appropriate steps like taking a break and exercising and making some changes..... This works for me, others may not be able to go without meds wothout going down the hole.... we are all different. GOOD LUCK answers pal.

Well, I've been depressed on and off for about 6 years. Speaking with some experience, I'd say try to alleviate yours with the easy things first. First of all, eating a balanced and nutritious diet is probably the most important thing you can do. I was addicted to junk food, frozen pizza and macdonald's for a long time, and I think that over time my body became malnurished. Eat fruits and vegetables every day, along with plenty of protein. Eggs, beans and meats have alot of protein in them. You might not notice a huge difference at first, but over time your body and mind will feel better. Next, make sure you're getting enough excercise. You could take a 30-min. walk every day and listen to some music at the same time. You don't have to go buy a gym membership.....just simple, non-strenuous excercise is fine. Even if you don't really feel like it, make yourself do it for the first little while. After some time, you'll start to look forward to your excercise time, because your brain knows that it will feel good afterwards. Make sure to get plenty of sleep! Good sleep is critical to feeling well. Those are all great ways to get you feeling better. I took anti-depressants for about 4 years, and after taking them, I advise people to look for natural ways to alleviate their depression first. To me, medicine should be a last-resort, because in my case, even though it made me feel better, I wasn't really my true self. Also, I relied on the medicine to feel good, rather than actually changing some bad habits that were leading to my depression, like sitting around the house alot and playing video games, not eating right, not excercising at all, and other things. Hope you get feeling better!
