Potty Training Help!?

Hello all, I need advice on how to go about potty training my son, he is 2.5 years old, he will be 3 in August and my husband and I have tried to potty train him several times. we gave him treats for sitting on his potty chair, but that's all he did was "sit" and he expected a treat! He has a song "Pee-Pee in the Potty" but he never tells me he wants to go, he hides behind the couch to go #2, and tells me to change his diaper, why wont he go to the potty?? I really would like for him to be potty trained by the age of 3, what do you moms think?? Please help Us!!

Everyone says wait until the kid is 2 1/2 or 3, but by then they are in the "no" and I won't do anything you want me to do stage.......OBVIOUSLY he's smart enough to know to go hide behind the couch when he's pooping...he knows it's coming and he knows enough to hide. This can turn into a big power struggle. I personally like to introduce the potty at 18 mo. and really start working on training at 2 before the no's hit, but you are where you are, so here are some suggestions. Sit him on the potty a few times a day at the same time. Read him a little potty book while he sits there...it gives him the message and should keep him sitting a few min. and also relax him so he may go. When he's done sitting...look in the potty with him....if nothing's there say...oh well, you didn't go this time...thank you for sitting, let's try and go later so you can get a treat. I used to keep a clear plastic container (that my daughter could NOT get open) in the bathroom....1 w/ fruit loops the other w/ m n m's......she got 2 F.L. for pee and a few MnM's for #2. (It taught her her colors too). Pay attention to when he's pooping each day.....is it always after dinner? Take him to the potty at that time. Get SUPER excited (obviously) when he uses toilet plus the rewards. Don't reward w/ treats unless he goes. Also, when he poops, change him in the bathroom.....dump the poop from the diaper into the toilet...let him flush it and wave bye bye to it! Go potty in front of him. Point out big kids who use the potty...show him big boy underpants in the store. There are just a million little tricks to the whole deal. The best way is not to battle him. You should probably stop giving him treats for just sitting on the potty. take him to the bathroom every hour or two and make him sit on the potty. but only give him a treat when he actually GOES potty. its working with my daughter and shes 2 years and 1 month. now he will probably try the i have to potty thing just to get a treat, but eventually he will learn when you dont give in. oh and when he says he has to potty take him! it doesnt matter if he doesnt go. good luck.

Girl......I know exactly where you are coming from! My son just turned 3 last month and it done with potty training!!

My only advice for you is to let them tell you when they are ready. It took me a week to teach my son how to go pee in the potty, but he would always poop his pants. It took him 5 months to learn how to poop in the potty.

He would go pee like a champ, but when it would come time for him to go poop, he'd always mess his underwear. Finally one day he just went in the bathroom and sat on his potty seat and did it!!

What you have to do is praise them when they do good, and don't get mad when they do bad. Then they'll be scared. His doctor told me that one day he will realize what to do and do it. And it worked!

Keep trying but dont push it. he will be ready when hes is ready. My daughter wasn't trained until she was 3 and 1/2. She knew how to do it, she was just interested in other things. Have you tried showing him the big boy pants he gets to wear when he learns? Maybe let him wear the underpants on the outside of his diaper to show him how big boys look. Just stress the big kid factor.

Boys are later for training than girls. Their bodies aren't ready yet. 3 is the magic age. I waited to three years and trained my daughter in a weekend. People are very competitive about this. Wait until he is three unless he has an interest in it. Don;t make it into a big deal.
