does this mean if there is a client with previously coloured hair at level 4, that it cannot be lightened to level 5 or 6?
Does she have to wait until it grows out?

No if she is a level 4 NATURALLY she can be lifted to a level 5 or 6 with 20 or 30 vol. But if shes a level 4 tinted then there is no way that she can be a level 5 or 6 with more tint, you would have to use a lightener. Tint can not lift tint, if you try to she'll end up with bright roots and dark ends.

the hair may naturally fede over a few washes to a base 5 depending on the history of the hair, say if it has been blonde in the past, the more time the tint has been applied the longer the colour will stay. you can cleanse the hair with an effasor( colour stripper) this is powder mixed with hot water, it is rubbed into the hair and has to done in small sections and kept warm or it will not work the hair also needs an inch root so it doesnt go on to scalp, iit is usually left about 15 mins depending how much lift you want and as you are only aiming for on to two levels it shoulnt be too long. the colour will be shocking bright orange as your underlying tones will come thru, then apply a base 6 (adding what tone you want) to give your client the result they want!! it take a while to do but the colour turns out great when done properley, this can be done in the same visit too.it is a pain that tint wont lift tint would make life so much easier!!

Color CANNOT lift color.

People dont' know this that is why you have people w/ jacked up hair color. The tint is not going to LIGHTEN hair with color on it. YOu can go darker but not lighter. You would have to decolorize to the desired level and then use a toner.

To put it simply, tints deposit. Tint does not lighten tint. Ever. You need a lightener first, then deposit color to color repair this one.
