More homework, means more work for them to grade, so I don't think they do it to make you do lots of work.

I figured it was because they wanted to prepare us for college.....

Of course, some teachers are perfectly willing to put up with the extra work of grading just to torture you a bit.....se my AP World History teacher, who gave us the biggest essay ever to write during finals week. I had no time to study.

Because you don't spend enough time at school to do everything.
And it's generally cruel.
It could be seen as a way to prepare you for adulthood by making you manage stuff to do, responsibilities etc.
