My friend wants to know, he is cheap.

(note: you can do a clean install with a vista upgrade CD, I know how to, just google it. But he doesn not trust me)

This would put his mind at ease if it were possible. I have the newest version of win 98 to lend him.

I agree with Dr. HOUSE; however, you can find out by using the Windows Vista: Upgrade Advisor, which will tell you what parts of your computer are incompatible. The link is posted as my source below.

No, he can't. The hardware requirements for Vista are so far beyond what a typical 98-era machine has that it's not possible. He would be wasting his money if he got a Vista upgrade CD.

If your friend really wants to use Vista, his best bet is to get a new computer that has Vista already installed on it. Sorry, he's just going to have to bite the bullet and squeeze out a few bucks.

Probably not. If his computer is currently running windows 98, there is probably no chance of it having the high hardware requirements of vista. It has nothing to do with the software that is already installed on the computer. Microsoft recommends to have a fast processor(around 2 Ghz), 1 GB Ram, and a powerful graphics card. I bet your friends computer nowhere near meets those requirements if it is running Win 98.
If he is really seroius about putting vista on his computer, tell him to go to the microsoft downloads page to download the Vista upgrade advisor:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
This tool will test his hardware and see whether or not his hardware is capable of running vista. If not. he will need to get a new computer and stop being cheap :P. If it can run vista, then you can go ahead w/ installation. (Cheapo!) just kidding.
Good luck with helping your friend.

To the best of my knowledge, the answer is no. A Vista upgrade CD only works with Windows XP.

Tell your friend to get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if his computer has less than 256MB of RAM). It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system. Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community.

Its highly doubtful that his PC has the ram he would need or a fast enough processor to begin with let alone the video card!

sure you can install it on any machine, but that dont mean it will work. and upgrades are bad news anyway. but if he wants to badlly enought, it must be xp for the upgrade to work.
