Ok I'll keep this brief and to the point. I started speaking to a girl after she messaged me on an online dating site. I will profess to not being brilliant with women otherwise I wouldn't be on there. We then started chatting on MSN before progressing to texting and finally phoning each other every day. We had even arranged to meet up this weekend only for her to call it off at the last minute saying she had childcare issues. She has stopped texting me now and when I went to phone earlier I found that she had gone out and her brother was babysitting. In light of thisI am ready to give this up as a bad job although will admit to being very disappointed. I'm taking it that I've interpreted her signals or lack of them correctly. Just looking for other people's opinions really?

Yeah, I hate to tell you dude, but you probably got brushed off, although I have no idea why. Everything sounded pretty cool, she was interested, you were interested.
I guess that is the potential pitfall in dating women with kids. It truly could be a kid issue. But if brother is watching the kids, then the girl must be out...but not with you.
I honestly wouldn't feel bad about being brushed off though, I mean...she has kids. So it's cool.

It does sound as though she has got cold feet.
However, if you want to be totally sure, ask. Her brother may have come to see her and said go out for a while, he may have said no before and then changed his mind and if she had already told you she was having problems then she may have felt bad coming back to you.
At least if you ask her then you will know for sure either way. What do you have to loose? you don't work with her or live down the street you won't have to bump into again if she says she has changed her mind. To coin the phrase 'Faint heart never won fair lady' If you cant face asking her over the phone or ringing her again in case she fobs you off send her an email.

Hard to say but it is possible that she is just really insecure and afraid of meeting you in person. Also since you met online she may have not been completely truthful with you and she's afraid what you will think about her real self. I would't give up on her completely just yet, but proceed with a lot of caution.
If she IS giving you the brush off...you are better off without her. There is somebody out there for you, but nobody needs someone who would treat them like that.
I know someone who met her husband online and they are very happy together, but you do need to be extremely careful meeting people that way which I'm sure you already know.

The definitive clue is that she is NOT doing anything to make you think she's still interested.
I.e., she doesn't care about keeping you interested.
I.e., she's no longer interested.
Now, there's a good chance she'll get interested again after the other guy she's met in the interim -- probably also on the dating site -- proves not to have worked out. Maybe you'll still be interested then and maybe you won't be. Just in case, best to stay very polite and non-accusing.

Not necessarily a brush off. For some reason, women love playing this game. Don't show her that you are disappointed. If she's really interested in you, she will call or text you. When she does, don't jump at the opportunity. Call her on flaking out on you and tell her that you will not tolerate it in the future.

Don't know because it depends on what you talked about.
My own personal opinion is that for you to arrange to meet is scary (no offenece this is meant kindly).
For example - She's maybe said that she's something that she's not and in embarrassed because obviouly meeting you will show that.
OR her family/friends have talked her out of it for safety issues....
I'd say you back off and let her contact you - if it's meant to be then she will contact YOU....

You're onto something.
Remember, take nothing anyone does personally.
If she can't handlethis liek an adult, well, it reflects on her, not you.
Maybe in the statistics and chances of life, someone else messaged her successfully a few days before you did, oh well.
