I really want a perm but last time I got one (about 5 years ago) it lasted for one day and was gone!!! Is my hair just unpermable or maybe the stylist messed it up? I don't want to pay another $50 for one day of curly hair lol.

I know why your perm didn't stick. This may get a little confusing, but I am going to try to explain it to you the best that I can.

All hair has sulfur in it. Whenever you accidentally burn hair, you get a foul smell. That's the sulfur changing in a chemical reaction due to heat. Hair contains a bunch of sulfur with one hydrogen atom attached to it. Whenever you get a perm, the hairstylist uses chemicals that "oxidizes" the sulfur in your hair. This means that the stylist chemically changes your hair by removing that hydrogen from the sulfur and fusing two sulfurs together. This is how your hair "holds shape" after it is chemically treated by the hair stylist. Let me attempt to draw you a picture.

Before perm:
--------------------------- (hair strand)
S S S S S S S S S (Sulfur)
H H H H H H H H H (Hydrogen attached to sulfur)

After perm:
---------------------------( hair strand)
S S S S S S S S S (sulfur)
S S S S S S S S S (sulfur)
-------------------------- (hair strand)

See, two hair strands are attached to each other chemically, and you lost two hydrogens in your hair. Since your hair is "oxidized," it can be re-oxidized by other elements in the air, and what this does is adds a Hydrogen back to your hair strand and returns it back to what it kina looks like before you walked into the hair salon. It can be oxidized by oxyen and ultraviolet light. Oxygen can be found everywhere, and ultraviolet light is from the sun. So, you see, there is not point to try to get a perm because nature is going to turn it right back to what it looked like. You're just wasting money.

I really hope that this helps.

If you feel like your perm only lasted one day you should have went back to your stylist.

Did you maybe wash your hair too soon? Some people don't realize that you aren't supposed to wash your hair right away.

Do you have a beauty college in your town? It is much cheaper, and they have hands on instructors where the chance of the stylist messing up is smaller

As for whether or not a cheap perm does not work, my Mother has used all kinds of perms on my hair and my daughter gave me a perm last year, that I bought at Wal Mart and we had no problem, it was about a $5.00 perm

I know what u mean. I just paid 65 for a perm it was out in two days. I do hair, but me personally always thought the person who was giving me the perm just didn't know what they were doing. U can have hair that is just to straight or to thick to perm. Mine is way toooooo straight so I will never have the benefit of curly hair. Also perms can be too weak depending on the brand. Cheaper the perm the poorer the result. Just have straight hair hun its not worth losing money over, trust me.

Probably the stylist screwed up. Just tell the stylist that perm didnt take. There are several different perm for differnt kind of hair expecially if you hair is stubborn to taking a curl.
Good Luck.

TRY A AT-HOME PERM AND SEE IF IT WORKS THEN. IF IT DOESN'T END UP WORKING.....THEN DON'T GET A PERM AT ALL. LOL
