gin is the original and has more taste. however vodka is more popular, because it has less taste therefore it is smoother.

I myself prefer gin. You may not like it because gin has a "perfumy" smell. However my martinis are made with Bombay Gin, martini and Rossi dry vermouth and an olive. Some people like a twist of lemon but I pass on that. Shaken of course...not stirred. Best served chilled.
Have you ever had a martini? Be careful. Its like a Manhatten...all booze. Two is my limit and that's pushing it.

that is really personal choice. A classic martini calls for gin, however many modern martinis are vodka based. I prefer vodka personally.

Martini is Gin.

The vodka is used for people that don't know what a real martini is... It's like putting training wheels on a bike so people aren't embarrassed when they ask for a vodka martini.

Vodka martini drinkers are probably the same type of people that buy expensive coffee but put a 1/4 cup of sugar in their coffee in the morning.

I recommend gin, especially good gin. Lots of people like Bombay Sapphire, but I prefer Van Gogh. Try a couple with differing amounts of vermouth. Some people like it more dry than others, so just start drinking them and see what you like. I also prefer them to be stirred, not shaken.
