I spent some time in Southern Germany and drank a Hefeweizen that I really liked and and am looking for something similar stateside. It was alot like a good homebrew beer with the cloudy yeast type color. Any ideas? I am locate in the midwest.

ive spent time in germany, holland, and belgium and ive had some spectacular weissbiers (wheat beers). my favorite american one is widmer brothers. its unfiltered like the ones you seem to prefer, so itll take on a nice chill-haze and cloud up when its cold

I'm from St. Louis, so I recommend the Schlafley Hefe. But you can get German hefeweizens stateside as well. I work at a pub in St. Louis, and we have several German hefes on our menu right now, including Franzikaner, Paulaner, Erdinger (both the original and the dunkel), Hofbrau, and Ayinger. I'm sure we have more, but I can't think of them right now. If you're nowhere near St. Louis, go to a GOOD liquor store and they should have some German hefes.

Franziskaner is a German hefe that can be found stateside in specialty liquor stores. If you want to try an American hefe, try Sam Adams, or Pyramid. A store like Trader Joe's or Cost Plus will have lots of other varieties to try. Traditionally, German hefes aren't served with citrus fruits, but American hefes are served with a slice of lemon or orange.

Shiner Hefeweizen. Made in TX. Maybe you can find it at a beer specialty shop. Very good!

I am not a weissbier lover but I have noticed that the American weissbier selected for Trader Joe's stores is Allagash, from Maine. That it is TJ's choice must say something. But they sell it in large bottles only, and it is expensive.

I recommend Julius Echter. Pyramid is good too, but Julius Echter is definitely a step above the others.

Harpoon makes one called UFO that's pretty good and easy to find- on the East Coast at least.

though it would be very hard to compete with an actual german hefe, i would suggest the Sam Adams Hefe. just had it last week and i enjoyed it.
